The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh men’s basketball team traveled to Italy for an experience of a lifetime last May. While abroad, the team competed in four games and bonded over traveling in a foreign country together.
“The Italians view eating as a social experience. We enjoyed many multi-course meals that took two hours or more from start to finish,” said Pat Juckem, UWO men’s basketball coach.
The team traveled abroad in a big group, which included coaches and family members. Their trip started in Montecatini Terme, Italy, and ended in Rome where memories were captured every step of the way.
“Climbing to the top of the mountain in Montecatini Terme was a hard task but was well worth it,” said A.J. Mueller, a UW Oshkosh senior finance and accounting major from Milwaukee. “It is the first amazing thing I saw in Italy, and I will never forget that morning with my teammates.”
The team traveled back to Oshkosh with an undefeated record and a new understanding of the game. “We saw a very different style of playing in Italy, but we kept to our system and game plans and won all of our games,” Mueller said.
The Titans finished strong last season, securing a bid in the NCAA Division III Tournament and winning the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament championship.
“There is no question the trip brought our team closer,” Juckem said. “They were able to have a life-changing experience with their teammates while exploring the incredible Italian culture.”
