The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Model United Nations team knows what it means to win big.

“For nearly four decades, the UW Oshkosh team has consistently brought outstanding delegations of students to the National Model United Nations,” said National Model United Nations (NMUN) Executive Director Michael Eaton. “Its tradition of excellence goes beyond the list of awards received annually—which are practically endless—as students learn to work with peers from around the world.”

The organization has taken home multiple awards over its 60-year-plus history at UW Oshkosh. For each of the last 32 years, the team won Outstanding Delegation awards at NMUN. This is the top award at the world’s largest Model UN competition.

UW Oshkosh is one of only two participating universities around the globe that has won two Outstanding Delegation awards in one competition.

“Because Model UN involves an intercollegiate academic competition, Model UN success benefits every student at UW Oshkosh by enhancing the academic reputation of the entire University,” said adviser Kenneth Grieb.

Nicole Lehto ’16, economics and international studies major, was a member of the UW Oshkosh Model UN team for the duration of her time as a student and participated in a number of national competitions.

“Two of the most useful skills I have learned from Model UN are researching and the ability to do impromptu public speaking,” Lehto said. “Model UN teaches smart and practical research and writing strategies that have helped me succeed in my classes and in my future career.”

After graduating last May, Lehto moved to Washington, D.C., to pursue a career in international development and economics. Lehto said the part she will miss most about participating in Model UN is the camaraderie among team members at UW Oshkosh.

“We’re not just friends, we are a family, and the family extends to 1969 when the team was founded,” Lehto said.
