The science of geology, which combines aspects of chemistry, physics and biology, captured Lauren Bane’s attention during an introductory class her freshman year at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.
That class plus encouragement from UWO geology professor Eric Hiatt prompted bane to switch majors, and she’s never looked back.
“I’m so happy I made the switch, and it has brought up a lot of different opportunities,” Bane said. “Geology just has so many applications. You can use it for energy resources or construction. There’s just so many different ways you can go with geology.”
Now as a senior set to graduate May 14, Bane, of Mukwonago, has a resume full of undergraduate research experience, including an honors thesis. She plans to begin a master’s program in fall 2016.
